Da Vinci Code - Banned!

His Excellency has decided to ban all public screening of the now infamous movie Da Vinci Code due to the pressure applied by the Catholic Church.

One could hardly expect anything less from a president whose whole political philosophy seemed to be nothing more than simple populism, add to that the possible repercussions of not heeding to church pressure on an issue where there is no counter pressure from any other religious element.

It’s the Catholic Church who should be criticized for their unjust curtailment of freedom of expression not to mention the pure stupidity of not understanding the move would only be counter productive as this would result in otherwise unprovoked curiosity which could and probably will result in increased DVD sales of the movie which are already available as ‘camera-copies’. The church should have learned that from the whole ‘Hollywood Buddha’ protests that the Buddhist elements once organized some years ago even after film-maker removed the controversial poster and apologized.

On a more personal note, I, myself being a practicing catholic don’t think anything depicted in the movie (or the book) will change my prospective on the religion I was brought up on. The fact that Jesus could have been married and had children with Mary Magdalene is irrelevant to the philosophy of Christianity I believe in.

The Da Vinci Code is just a good story, many of the so called ‘facts’ in the book have been since proven to be inaccurate. However the best way the Catholic Church in Sri Lanka or elsewhere should have handled this issue is to have not handled it at all.

The book was for sale, and people read it. The CD/DVD of the movie will be for sale, I'd love to see Mahinda and his culture corps lining up the street vendors in Pita Kotuwa and collecting all pirated CDs/DVDs.

Dream on Your Excellency....

ya machan, shit-only. :)

but anyways i dont think the DVDs will be banned. it doesnt constitute 'public screening' ?

People talk so matter of factly about this ! It is purely a piece of FICTION. Any "FACTS" are those conjured up in Dan Browns mind or .plaigarised from other sources ref : his recent court case why has SL bigwigs been fooled by a piece of fiction ? The answer is so he can forget the real "FACTS" i.e the LTTE typical amaturish smokescreen by a pundit leader.

banning the 'da vinci code' is like indirectly saying that srilankans do not have enough intelligence to distinguish fact from fiction through a movie..

I posted that last post as anon cause of a technical problem.
Savi : This simply reinforces the simple perception that we are easily fooled and led and as you observed incapable of distinguishing reality from fiction. We also advertise the fact that we can be manipulated by a very powerful yet small state that of the Vatican City. And adding insult to injury that we cannot think for ourselves.

agree with your post and savi .
this was silly in the extreme.
one would have thought catholic bishops to have more sense than to request a ban. they would have done better to read the church history, they should have learned from all those precedents by now

very image of 2000 year old church running for cover bc of a bad(imo) book and worse(according to reports) film is doesn't make one respect it.

only way to expose lies is to make daylight shine on them so that others can judge for themselves. not keeping them covered.

if there was libel of opus dei etc. there are other method to seek redress.

Janapathi, dude

how da fk can this be linked with the LTTE? and this doesnt really concern any relegious fights.. we dont have them in this country.. not now anyway..

baning a movie, a book or even a cartoon just because it has something that goes against a relegious norm is just wrong in principle, that's all.

thanks for the comments from others, agree to a degree with most of u :P

Dinidu's Observation on Sri Lankan Blogs: As the list of comments on a post grows longer, the probability of LTTE and NGO's being discussed approaches one.

And this goes on to show how much influence the catholic church has...

"..And this goes on to show how much influence the catholic church has..."

yup it probably has the largest influence after the various Buddhist organizations.

there is no Islamic or Hindu 'Lobby' to speak of, which is great.

religion should be a private matter, especially when that section of people are not being specifically oppressed because of their religion.
