Sri Lanka : The 3rd most horniest country in the World?

The most horniest is Pakistan, followed by Bangladesh. That's according to Google Insights. See the graph here:

(Click to enlarge or see Google Insight link)

I used insights to show the results for the terms 'porn' or 'sex'. Also notice that the top 4 countries with the highest search volume for these terms are all South Asian -- Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and India. A SAARC orgy anyone?

In any case, I can think of two possible explanations for the results.

First, in lower-income countries, the utility of non-porn related internet activities (searches in this case) are low. There's no real thriving e-commerce industry, so searching for soap, books or mini-skirts wouldn't yield much. Nor do people search for things like local news on general search engines like Google, because of all the noise created by 'western content'. After all according to Alexa 9 of the the 100 most visited websites in Sri Lanka are porn-related.

But there are few kinks with this hypothesis. If this were true then most lower-income countries would have higher proportion of horny-searches. This isn't exactly the case. Nigeria for example has a much lower per-capita income level than Pakistan and it produces less horny searches than the U.S.

The second explanation, (which I think is more to the point) is this: All people are horny. But countries of who's cultures promote a hush-hush attitude towards sex, find other means to satisfy their horniness, such as watching Internet porn. Notice that middle-eastern countries such as Egypt, Yemen immediately follows their South Asian counterparts in the horny search index.

Conclusion: we are just bloody sexually-oppressed and bored on the Internet. But you didn't need me to tell you that. Bugger, what a waste time..

Notes : 1) Google Insights normalizes all data. Biases resulting from higher-search volumes of certain countries are removed. 2) Horny-country inspiration from IndiaUncut.

Boobs on Bikes

Apparently, theere's a Boobs on Bikes Parade in Auckland, New Zealand. Some kiwi conservatives wants to stop that on legal grounds. But here's what the judge had to say,
It is topless people, men and women, in a public place, which is perfectly legal under our Bill of Rights and under New Zealand law. Mr McCoskrie [director of Family First] keeps harping on that it is pornography. They are breasts; they're not a big deal.
This is probably what The Sri Lankan cultural conservatives say when they want to reconcile the porn ban with the Sigiriya paintings. They are just boobs -- no big deal.

More at reason.

On The Logic of Life (A review)

Ever since Stevens, Levitt and Dubner broke into the scene with their enormously popular Freakonomics, there has been a multitude of popular economics books. Books that uses the tools of economics -- the study of incentives, laws of supply and demand, trade-offs -- and apply them to everyday life. The result is often a fun, counterintuitive explanation of how the world works. Dubner and Levitt's most memorable contribution being attributing the decreasing crime rates in the U.S. to legalizing abortion.

Tim Harford wrote the first of these pop. econ. books -- the undercover economist. A popular book among economics students, perhaps not so much outside the discipline. With his latest work, The Logic of Life : the rational economics of an irrational world, Harford takes on the mainstream.

If you are interested in finding out why your boss is overpaid, why racism is still persistent or why teenage girls are increasingly giving blow jobs to their boyfriends, this book is for you.

Fundamental to Harford's book, is rational choice theory. His argument is not so much that “people are always and everywhere rational”. He admits they aren't. His contention is that people are "rational nearly enough and often enough" to make rational choice, a useful framework to understand the world. "Earth isn't a perfect sphere", writes Harford, "But it's nearly a sphere, and for many purposes the simplification that the Earth is a spherical will do nicely."

If you are thinking Harford imagines human beings as absolutely rational beings, along the lines of the infamous "homo economious" or the "economic man" capable of sophisticated reasoning, you are wrong. Harford is deeply aware that human beings are motivated by all kinds of human emotions. He writes, "These motivations are not financial, and not always selfish -- but our responses to them are national. As any teenager will remind you, no less planning, calculating, strategizing goes on about maters of heart than about the matters of the wallet."

Harford surveys the the work of number of economists, experiments involving human beings to lab rats, and data involving house prices to blow-job rates to answer the most interesting of questions. Why do more women live in the cities? why do racial minorities self-segregate? Why do voters choose bad politicians? and why do more and more teenage girls go down on their boyfriends? To all of this, there is a rational answer.

Ask that last question from any Sri Lankan TV-intellectual and they would give the standard western-culture-destroying-our-culture explanation. Social scientists might similarly offer more sophisticated versions of the same story. Ask an economist (or at least Tim Harford) and the explanation is simple. The American "blow job epidemic", according to Harford, is a rational response to changing incentives. When costs or benefits of something change, people change their behavior. Thanks to sex education, many teenagers (at least in the U.S.) know that regular sex has real risks -- they are much more aware of not just about the risk of pregnancy, but the risks associated with sexually transmitted diseases which comes with penetrative sex. Comparatively, oral sex has less risks or as Harford puts it, "The costs of oral sex are, quite simply, lower than the costs of regular sex". Teenage girls weigh these costs and benefits -- not always consciously -- before going down on their boyfriends. The result is while the rate of penetrative sex among teenagers in the U.S. is going down, the popularity of oral sex is on the rise.

The Logic of Life, is full of this type of fun and provoking ways of explaining things based on hard data. You might think that much of the stories in the book doesn't apply to places like Sri Lanka. Certainly, some of it doesn't, but a lot of it, (especially the chapter about "rational racism" and politics) does. Harford's logic of life is smart, well-written and a joy to read. I you liked Freakonomics, you'll love this one. Even if you didn't, you'll still like it.

For more (admittedly better) reviews, visit the Book's website. Harford, like many economists of this genre maintains an engaging blog, which I read often. Unfortunately, I haven't seen the book in Sri Lanka as yet. You can order it from amazon. For some excerpts from the chapter about love and marriage, see this slate article.

War against Men

According to the Daily Mirror all Sri Lankan males (and some females) are criminals. Here's a report,

Women and Child Bureau (WCB) is filing legal action against Sri Lankans appearing in pornographic videos and pictures on the internet violating the Indecent Publication Act of 1983 Article No. 23.

On information provided by anonymous sources, the WCB was conducting investigations into the people posing for illegal video and pictures for internet websites, CI, Buddhika Balachandran of the WCB said.

“Most of the people have been posted on the internet didn’t know about it,” CI Balachandran said. The WCB is using the provisions made in the legal system and will take legal action against the relevant parties.

Initial investigations which began a month ago have found 20 cases but he thinks the issue to be deep-rooted with many other cases, CI Ariyaratna said. The WCB hopes to charge the maximum fine of Rs. 10,000 with a definite jail sentence of more than one year for the parties who are found guilty he said.

Although he believes the fine was not tough and needs a revision, he was willing to take legal steps to deter people from encouraging and taking part in such videos and pictures.

According to him it was against the law for a Sri Lankan to be watching pornographic material [link]

Bugger. I can have sex, get married, booze, join the army but no says mommydaddy government, "you can't watch porn!".

Postscript : DailyMirror is updating their site. That's great. But in the meantime (or most probably forever) they have broken all the old links. That's poor web strategy. Now all the old links need to be prefixed by a dailymirror.wijeya.lk address instead of the dailymirror.lk domain, which I assume is where the suppsed "2.0" site will be hosted.

Why We Shouldn't Study

A friend emails me these two adverts from the Sunday Observer :

and this one..

the email also goes on to say,
From the early ages of our lives our parents, teachers and relatives told us so many good things about education. But sometimes we come across situations where we have to think twice about them!
hmm. Maybe so, but maybe the secretary's job description doesn't include the occasional blow job for the chairman. But hell, who'd want to work for the Central Bank anyway!

The "Money" in Sex

This piece by Amit Varma on victimless crimes reminds me of something I've been thinking of recently about illegal prostitution.

Like I wrote earlier on this blog, there's no such thing called free sex. Sex has costs, just like any other thing, not all of it is monetary - emotional baggage, burden of relationship, so on. But money can (and often is) used to incentivise sex between two consenting adults (think flowers, booze, etc) none of this is considered a crime. But when money changes hands directly - without flowers intervening for example - it suddenly becomes a crime. Hypocrisy? not a new term for governance is it?

No such thing called a Free fu*k

Dinidu reminds me of this one time at band camp, ok no, over vodka, we invented (I'm pretty sure it was just me, and not "we") the phrase there's no such thing called a free fuck. Although, at the time we kind of meant it differently, suggesting that no sex really comes without emotional baggage, direct payment or other consequences, the quote is pretty much a derivative of the infamous saying often attributed to the economist Milton Friedman who liked to remind people that there's no such thing called a free lunch.

Now what this really mean is not that you won't ever get to have no-strings-attached sex. (or lunch for that matter) it just means to get something you like, you have to give up something else you also kinda like. That is, the "cost" of something is whatever you have to give up to get it. So even if your friend sponsors you a hooker, who comes to your house to have sex with you, and you don't really have a girlfriend to feel guilty about, there will always be costs, like the time wasted having sex, while you could have watched good TV. Sometimes (probably most), the costs are well worth the benefits.

Economics of Sex is a fascinating subject, something I wish I could write more on.

Development Indicators..

According to recent reports, Christina Caldera, a Sri Lankan student at the University of Texas made it to the PlayBoy Magazine.

Sri Lanka is really coming along, blond bimbos - check, gay celebrity - check, PlayBoy Mag - check. Next stop, um.. MILF Hunter?

Ok ok I know this is old news, but did you know Authur C Clarke was also on Play boy in 1986? So technically speaking, Ms.Caldera isn't the first Sri Lankan to be on PlayBoy. This kind of proves my point about Sri Lankan development, JR really did ruin everything.

Medical Prostitution?

During the days of recent the spilitzer scandal, A reader of Andrew Sullivan's site asked, Why can't there be "medical Prostitution". That is, prostitution be legal for medical requirements. After all, in some states in the U.S. have legalized Marijuana for medicinal use.

This report from TOI confirms that Sullvan's reader definitely has a case,
According to a research from Queen’s University in Belfast, a good morning session at least three times a week, decreases the risk of heart attack or stroke by half and a regular session improves circulation, thereby reducing blood pressure.

According to a study in New Scientist, a steamy session twice a week enhances IgA, an antibody that provides protection against microbes that multiply in body secretions, reports the ‘Sun’. Morning sex also helps in alleviating arthritis and migraine. It burns around 300 calories an hour that simultaneously diminishes the risk of developing diabetes.

Moreover, an American study involving 300 sexually active women whose partners did not use condoms revealed that they were less prone to depression.

Sex increases the production of testosterone that provides stronger bones and muscles thus helping to stave off osteoporosis.

A good morning session can make the hair shine and skin glow by raising the output of oestrogen and other hormones which are associated with it.

According to Yale School of Medicine researchers, having morning sex can aid in averting endometriosis, a condition where the tissue that normally lines the uterus, grows in other parts of the pelvis. [link]
Best form of exercise too.. maybe prostitution joints can pretend to be gyms.

Comercial Sex Monkeys

According to one study, monkeys pay for sex. that's right, there are monkey-whores. .um I mean commercial sex workers. This is what TIME says,
It turns out that one of humanity's oldest professions may be even older than we thought: In a recent study of macaque monkeys in Indonesia, researchers found that male primates "paid" for sexual access to females — and that the going rate for such access dwindled as the number of available females went up.
Hell. they even understand economics. more..
The macaques' [monkeys] exchange of services simply illustrates a nifty system of cooperation that allows for successful mating. The basic premise, says Gumert, is called biological market theory, which follows the elementary principles of supply versus demand. When applied to the voluntary sex life of long-tailed macaques, it means that the price that one group is willing to pay for a commodity that the other group has depends on the scarcity or abundance of that commodity on the market. Scientists think female macaques may use grooming, too, to try to maintain social relationships within the group to benefit their offspring, or as a way to distract or appease males from getting aggressive after a sexual encounter. In fact, when female macaques groomed males, their services decreased sexual activity in males. [Read in Full]
See, this is why we should legalize Prostitution. i meant it's totally evolution, we cant regulate evolution and besides there are no reports of monkey-pimps or violence. Just free-exchange, and everyone's happy.

Next Step, monkey sex-ed. Use protection you monkeys!

Rounding Up ’07

I really think the nation has prospered during the last year.

Think about it, we now have a credible American Idol-clone, we have our very own bimbo Paris Hilton wanna-be who’s not only blond (literally) and in bad movies, but plans on releasing a music album (Yes, Anar!! This one’s for you!!). And who said news was boring? Evening news has never been better, it’s like a reality show –people beating up ministers, baby-thieves complete with prize money, parliamentary drama. Yes, things are certainly headed in the right direction, now all we need is a bit of public nudity – and we‘ll get there.

It has also been a year of Records, We are now the proud citizens of the country with the world's largest cabinet, Lasith Malinga took 4 wickets in 4 balls, Murali became the highest test wicket taker in the world and our terrorists became the first in the world to acquire aircrafts. We should be proud of the boys – the cricketers I mean.

2007 was also the year of crossovers – the staunchest critics of the government in ‘06 are now its biggest allies, its biggest allies in '06 are now its staunchest critics. In other related news, His Excellency donated a ministry to the Buddhist party. Champika Ranwaka is now the official “pintata amathya”.

In the military front, we liberated the east and Thoppigala, and easterners are now basking in freedom and liberty with a touch of friendly terror courtesy the Karuna and Pillian faction, before the former made a diplomatic entry to Her Majesty’s Kingdom. In the Peace front.. well there’s no peace front.

As far as the economics goes, the government has responded to high inflation the best way it knows how - by Changing the indexes. This follows a previous failed attempt by the Minister of consumer affairs and trade, to introduce a parliamentary Act which has teeth and the ability to "bark".

Anyway, the past year taught us many lessons, both locally and internationally. Thanks to DM Jayaratne we now know that these “abduction” stories are actually false UNP propaganda. People are just freeing themselves “from their wives to enjoy with their pretty ones in unknown locations”.

Internationally, we now know that everything is caused by Global Warming, including Nobel Peace Prizes. In other ‘07 news, Al-Gore is not the Man of the year, the Chinese banned reincarnation, and Russia declared Sex Leaves for workers while a sex worker in Chile auctioned off 27 hours of sex, all for charity.

Oh well, there goes ’07. Looks like we started '08 with a bang, and having having a blast already.

No Virgins in India

I love India, partly because its the only country i know of which is probably (yes, probably) more F'd up than ours. Just recently, Sushmita Sen has been issued a notice by a Madras(chennai) High court on comments about "pre-martial sex". From IndiaFM :
The actress, in a T.V. interview, had commented that “No Indian has chastity or virginity anymore” which didn’t go down well with the legal authorities and the moral police, who felt that such comments could affect the moral fabric of India.

A notice has been issued to the Tamil daily as well, which published the transcripts of the television interview.

In the past, actresses like Khushboo, Reema Sen and Shilpa Shetty have also faced similar petitions in the past for their ‘controversial’ comments. (emphasis added) [link]

Buy a Beetle leaf and Get a condom free

A Beetle leaf vendor (paanwala) in India is giving away a condom with every purchase of beetle leaves to promote Safe Sex, near a red light district. See it on NDTV

If it rains, it's global warming

and if it doesn't, it's still Global Warming.

See, Global Warming causes everything. Including disasters like brothel-struggles, banana destruction, unfashionable cloths, sex changes, Whale-weight loss, Crocodile sex, moose-eating wolves, smaller brains and perhaps more disturbingly, lawyer incomes increase.

Well, at least the beer gets better. Check out the 600+ list of everything caused by global warming. Funny, cant find John Howard anywhere on the list.

Sigh.. Ultimately, the climate-change hysteria will cost us more than the actual climate risks.

Sex, for a good cause

The term "Commercial Sex Work" doesn't cut it any more.
A Chilean prostitute has auctioned 27 hours of sex to raise money for the country's largest charity during an annual fund-raising campaign.

Maria Carolina became an overnight celebrity in the conservative Roman Catholic country, making news headlines and appearing on talk shows since she made her unusual donation to the televised charity event, which runs for 27 hours starting on Friday evening.

"I've already auctioned off the 27 hours of love," Maria Carolina told Reuters on Wednesday, saying she had raised about $4,000. "One of my clients already paid. It seemed like a good deed to him. [More..]

Stripping Sherawat

I recently discovered that some dude in India has sued Mallika Sherawat for an apparent show of obscenity; she pulled down some guy’s trousers at a New Year’s Eve party. Rediff covers it here [Mallika will strip all men], a clip from the dance is on YouTube, photos are here.

I would understand if the person whose trousers got pulled off sued Ms. Sherawat, after all dancing without your trousers in public can’t be all that fun (or is it?). Especially if you are sporting a hard-on which is a definite possibility with Sherawat shaking-it about.

But why would a total stranger unconnected to the whole episode, wants to sue Sherawat?

A similar incident Happened to Anarkalli Akarsha when some government official accused Ranjan Ramanayake of forcing Anarkalli to strip down during the shooting of One Shot. Now everyone likes Anarkali, her long list of admirers includes the president, his sons, the foreign minister, and apparently business tycoons. Hell, even I don’t mind her as long as she doesn’t speak. That’s one part of her that hasn’t developed much from her preteens or even earlier. Now Anarkalli is apparently suing a certain newspaper who came up with the story.

What would it take for subcontinent creatures to mind their own business I will never know.
